Honoring Your Goals With Your Daily Decisions
TFM coach Terri Lance talks about the importance of setting goals – and being honest with yourself about your decisions
Everyone reading this has a specific goal – or a number of goals – related to their health and/or weight. And, most people find that, beyond learning the information about fasting and feasting as ways to achieve these goals, things can be challenging.
For some, it means letting go of certain problematic foods or behaviours. For others, it means overhauling everything they have ever learned about how to eat and what is “healthy.”
But, it seems safe to say that, although some aspects might be easy or achieved in a short time, much of the work takes time and conscious effort. And, because of this, it is vital to know WHY you’re fasting and eating in a certain way.
Your goal is IMPORTANT or you wouldn’t even be reading this.
Maybe you want to lose 20, 60 or 120 pounds. Maybe you want to avoid developing type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, fatty liver, kidney failure or dementia/Alzheimer’s.
Maybe you want to no longer need multiple medications to manage your blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and other chronic health concerns.
Maybe you want to enjoy more mobility, less joint pain, better sleep, hormonal regulation, clearer skin, less brain fog and strengthened immunity.
The list of the possible goals our community members might be striving toward is long and varied, and include many more than are listed here.
So, when you feel stuck, or frustrated that you’re juggling eating and fasting times around social events, or seeking food options that fit the newer healthy criteria you’re learning… stop and think about your WHY. Then honestly check in and consider whether the decision you want to make is helping you or hindering you in reaching this important goal.
If your goal is to have blood sugar numbers that mean some of your medication becomes unnecessary, is waiting four more hours or until tomorrow really that bad?
If your goal is to be able to wear clothes three sizes smaller than your current wardrobe, is eating ice cream during your favourite night time television show helping you?
None of this is meant to encourage you to use a negative, shaming or punitive mindset toward yourself.
Instead, by focusing on what you want to achieve health- and/or weight-wise and evaluating what supports you in reaching these goals, you can actually feel better and be able to make tough decisions. Acknowledging which choices will keep you stuck and ultimately unable to reach your goals and which will contribute to achieving your goals can be very powerful.
Consciously linking fasting and feasting decisions to your goals can be a very positive way to navigate the challenges in your journey. It can help you evaluate decisions to fast or eat certain foods differently than you may have in the past, because the better option seemed difficult, inconvenient, unfair or less satisfying.
Instead, by choosing things that help you achieve your goals, you will feel empowered and satisfied in ways much more rewarding than the instant gratification of making choices that hinder your success.
Honouring your goals = honouring yourself!
